Our Story

"We teach literacy skills in English to empower adults for successful engagement in the home, workplace, and community."

That has been York County Literacy Council's mission since 1976. We offer literacy services necessary for an estimated 40,000 functionally illiterate adults in York County to become active and self-sufficient members in our community.

The Literacy Council equips adult learners with the training and tools necessary to achieve educational and personal goals, including:
  • Earn a high school equivalency diploma
  • Increase English language skills
  • Become U.S. Citizens
  • Enter career-training programs or post-secondary education
  • Obtain employment or improve employment skills
  • Increase their involvements with their children’s education

In our 47th year of service, we have seen much success – many students’ goals achieved, expanded programs, growing volunteer numbers and FINALLY a new facility!

Thanks to supporters like you, students and their families are able to overcome barriers to reach their dreams.
